• Uber has proposed, on the OSM Community forum, an organised editing activity to improve pedestrian mapping in 21 countries. Various mappers criticise it due to a lack of details and because Uber has a poor track record in the UK.

• Rphyrin made an Overpass Ultra script for viewing image=* tags in OpenStreetMap.

• MideaFind has used OpenStreetMap data to collect the locations of stores that might sell portable air conditioners.

• Andrea Grandi explained why Book Corners won’t sync contributions back to OpenStreetMap. Pieter Vander Vennet responded in his blog.

Imports

• Oscar Car Rental announced ► that they are planning an organised editing activity to add their 93 missing car rental locations in Germany, along with performing some data maintenance.

OSM research

• Marni Davis documented Atlanta’s immigrant population in the late 19th century, visualising their neighbourhoods on an OpenHistoricalMap basemap.

Maps

• ^[1]^ Victor Rotariu and his team are developing a live urban heat map that estimates street-level thermal conditions at a resolution of roughly 25 metres. This data will power a new ‘Cool’ routing mode. Rather than selecting only the fastest or shortest cycling route, Cool mode will identify the route with the lowest estimated heat exposure. The goal is simple: help cyclists avoid the hottest streets, enjoy a more comfortable ride, and arrive at their destination with less sweat on hot summer days.

OSM in action

• A 23-year-old student developer from South Korea has created a navigation app for finding shade covered areas, which has shot to the top of the App Store’s navigation apps. The app uses OpenStreetMap data to plot routes.

Software

• HeiGIT presented their latest update on the roadmap toward the new ohsome API 2.0, outlining the next steps in the evolution of the ohsome platform for analysing OpenStreetMap data. The update introduced planned developments, improvements, and future directions aimed at creating a more flexible, efficient, and sustainable API for OSM history data analytics.

Releases

• The CoMaps team published release 2026.07.16, which is now available via Codeberg, F-Droid, Google Play, and the iOS AppStore. This version adds a preview of turn-by-turn directions when creating a route, adds lane guidance and improved next turn descriptions for iOS/CarPlay, per-transport-mode routing options, support for more OSM tags, and many further bug fixes and improvements.

• Organic Maps July 2026 has been released, bringing a collection of bug fixes and general improvements.

• A note for mappers resolving notes: Organic Maps version 2026.07.15 has fixed a long-standing issue, where notes left inside large forest polygons and road lines would always move to the centre of the object. Notes are now added at the user’s click location.

• Tina announced that OsmAnd Astronomy, currently available in the OsmAnd Android 5.4 beta (on paid plans Maps+ and OsmAnd Pro), now includes tools for exploring solar and lunar events. Users can move through a timeline to preview upcoming astronomical events, check eclipse visibility from any location on Earth, and watch exactly how each solar or lunar eclipse will unfold before it actually occurs.

• HeiGIT reported the release of Ohsome-Planet version of 1.3.1, codename ‘Baarle-Hertog’. This tool is designed to facilitate the transformation of raw OpenStreetMap history data into the geoParquet format, making it more accessible for spatial data analysis.

OSM in the media

• BRUZZ, a local newspaper in Brussels, commented ► on the rise in recent years of private swimming pools in residential neighbourhoods. They praised OSM volunteers for having mapped them and showed maps with their locations.

• Heise’s c’t Open Source Spotlight newsletter reported ► on CoMaps and interviewed OSM community member Bastian Greshake Tzovaras about CoMaps, OSM and free software in general.

Other “geo” things

• Google had integrated its AI image generator ‘Nano Banana 2’ into Google Earth. They removed it two days later after people started abusing it, as the BBC reported.

• The Times of India explained how Polynesian navigators crossed the Pacific Ocean by reading the stars, ocean swells, winds, birds, and clouds to find their way.

• In response to the recent news about Moroccan migrants crossing into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, OpenCage reshared their previously published geo-trivia posts about Spain and Morocco.

Mapping

• ^[1]^ Les Libres Géographes has shared a methodology called OSM Skeleton, which aims to reduce the heterogeneity of OpenStreetMap data to create a coherent and locally maintainable common dataset of geographic references. The approach systematically identifies, on a national scale, missing, incomplete, inaccurate, or obsolete features among those considered fundamental: place nodes, road network, and residential areas. It uses a hybrid feature called ‘urban areas’ for analytical purposes. In particular, it generates WMS layers of alerts, instruction pages for easily correcting them in JOSM or iD, tracking statistics, and also a score for the density of POIs in towns. Séverin Ménard will present it at the upcoming SotM in Paris.

Community

• ASRvwde shared a collection of various mapping tools that support OSM mapping activities.

• Calvin Amevienku, YouthMappers Regional Ambassador to Ghana, has coordinated his first end-of-year mapathon under his working plan for 2026. The initiative organised training for 25 YouthMappers on how to use JOSM and the HOT Tasking Manager. The activity was sponsored by the IVIDES DATA, from Brazil, and the organisers hope the next steps will help improve the mapping skills of the YouthMappers chapter at the University of Education - Winneba.

• Nile_thebest explained that his passion for mapping on OpenStreetMap has never really faded since he first registered more than 11 months ago.

• Christoph Hormann has written a blog post responding to a OSM Community forum discussion about the OSMF’s AI and chatbot policy, under which moderators may delete AI-generated text or images and have been advised to use the Pangram detection tool. He argues the controversy stems from combining moderator authority with technocratic platform management, leaving forum participants without the tools or experience to manage their own social interactions. Drawing on Usenet-era killfiles, he suggests LLM use by human participants would be less contentious if users could individually filter content rather than have it collectively regulated. He concludes that the dispute reflects an unconsidered attempt to centrally control what people write and read, instead of giving them individual freedom to manage it themselves.

• Rphyrin pondered the ethics of conducting large-scale mapathon campaigns after learning that, in a certain neighbourhood, the locals deliberately preferred to make internal navigation difficult for outsiders to increase the security of the neighbourhood’s residents.

Events

• OSM US tooted that the SOTMUS 2026 videos are available on its YouTube channel. There are almost 60 videos available in the playlist.

OSM research

• Robert Klar and David Gundlegård applied machine learning to predict zonal travel demand using OSM-derived built environment features, including land use, points of interest, and road network attributes, combined with population estimates from WorldPop, in two case study cities: Stockholm and Norrköping. Their research shows that OSM features, particularly those related to residential land use, buildings, and POIs (e.g. companies, healthcare facilities, and public transportation), are strong predictors of zonal travel demand.

Maps

• EclipseMap is an interactive map by Alessio Zanol that allows users to explore the visibility of the solar eclipse on 12 August across Europe. The map shows whether the solar eclipse will be total or partial at a selected location. The app uses OpenStreetMap-based vector tiles from OpenFreeMap as its base map.

• The Agroecology Map is an interactive web map based on OpenStreetMap, maintained by Marcelo S Souza and Eduardo F Formighieri, which showcases agroecological initiatives, as well as records of places and practices. It is intended to promote the sharing of open knowledge and strengthen collaborative networks across different regions. The source is available on Codeberg.

• The Flosm Power Grid is a web map showing the global infrastructure of electricity grids, from high to low voltage, with substations and power plants, all based on OSM data. The elements can be visualised individually via a fold-out selection bar to the left of the map. It is maintained by 123map GmbH & Co.KG and hosted at 123map.de. You can see the set of tags used by this project on taginfo.

OSM in action

• Equidistance.io has analysed OpenStreetMap data and declared The Greene Man on Euston Road to be London’s most equidistant pub. Based on public transport journeys from where residents of all 33 London boroughs actually live, no borough requires more than 70 minutes to reach the pub, with a travel time difference of just 47 minutes between the nearest and furthest boroughs.

• Following Czechia, #geoweirdness turned its attention to proposed national mergers, such as ‘Pan-Iberism’ between Spain and Portugal. Today, the idea has lost momentum since both countries are now part of the EU.

• Denjam used OpenStreetMap data to answer the question: ‘What proportion of beauty salons in a particular city allow customers to book online without having to ring first’?

Software

• The openstreetmap-website project celebrated 20 years since the first commit with some old screenshots of a very different era.

• Soon, when uploading a GPX trace to OSM, you will no longer be able to choose some of the visibility levels, as the website development team is working to simplify and improve the GPX trace management system.

• OSM2CDR is a web service that exports OpenStreetMap data for any drawn area or administrative boundary into 62+ formats aimed at non-GIS users, CorelDRAW CDR, AutoCAD DWG/DXF, SVG, STL for 3D printing, and dozens of other formats, keeping map layers editable and clipping exports to administrative boundaries. The catalogue offers about 2.9 million ready to use admin areas in 193 countries. There is also a blog with rich content. The ODbL attribution is embedded in every export.

• OWL Places can now work in reverse: adding OpenStreetMap links to Wikidata.

Programming

• Juno Computers have developed Car Navigation, a navigation app for Linux systems. It uses OpenStreetMap data and services for place search and route planning, including Photon, Nominatim, OSRM, and Valhalla.

• Andy Townsend has updated his diary entry describing how to set up an Overpass API server, covering data for Britain and Ireland only (we reported earlier). The guide is a response to the ongoing overload of public Overpass servers and uses an actively maintained forked version of the Overpass software. The guide walks you through server setup on Hetzner cloud hardware, Apache configuration, compilation, and loading data from a Geofabrik extract. The post also links to other installation guides, including Brian Sperlongano’s guide and an earlier diary entry by Kai Johnson.

• Milan Janosov shared an urban data science reading list, including a hands-on path from your first OpenStreetMap query to city-scale spatial models.

Did you know that …

• … BeMaps.es? BeMaps is a web-based mapping tool that allows you to create and share maps in three steps: upload data, select a map template, and publish or share with specific recipients. This tool offers pre-prepared data layers for regions around the world. BeMaps was developed by the GEOT (Geography) and IAAA (Information Systems) research groups at the University of Zaragoza, in collaboration with the company Geoslab. As well as a free version, there are paid plans available for educational purposes, non-profit organisations, and standard use.

• … Milan Janosov posted, on Substack, a short guide ‘OpenStreetMap vs Global Building Atlas (GBA) Explained’? It includes Python scripts to extract buildings from OSM and the GBA, a new dataset from the Technical University of Munich covering 2.75 billion buildings worldwide, derived from satellite imagery and deep learning (we reported earlier).

Other “geo” things

• The Digital Encyclopedia of Africa compiles the civilisations, languages, myths, architecture, and living traditions of indigenous communities across the continent. The website has an interactive map and is full of city profiles which are based on open archives (UNESCO, museums, public libraries), alongside premium and scholarly sources for deeper research.

• Arte is showing the video ‘Contre-cartographie: What Google Maps Doesn’t Show You’. Two French artists feature in it: Larissa Fassler and Mathias Poisson. They explain the concept of counter-cartography. This approach challenges our usual relationship with space. It also questions how we normally represent the world. This brings to light issues that would otherwise go unnoticed. The video has subtitles in English, Spanish, Polish, and Italian.

• Werner Pluta, of Heise, reported that researchers from RWTH Aachen, ETH Zurich, and the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia triggered an artificial earthquake with a magnitude just below zero in the Alps as part of an experiment to improve future earthquake prediction.

• While Joël Lapointe, an amateur astronomer, was planning a camping vacation in 2024 he observed a strange 25 km depression near lake Marsal, north of Magpie in Quebec, that looked like a meteor crater in satellite imagery. Alerted geologists explored the site and confirmed the discovery of this previously unidentified 390-million-year-old Uhackatik meteor crater. The name was chosen in consultation with the Innu Council of Ekuanitshit.

• Jnally, of Spatial Source, reported that Andrii Rohovyi recently improved the routing algorithm of OpenTripPlanner. Rohovyi explained their improvement in a preprint, ‘Early Pruning for Public Transport Routing’, available on arXiv.

Mapping campaigns

• Ranjeet Jadhav, of Mid-Day, reported that Jaipur-based long-distance hiker Manav Singh Shekhawat has mapped more than 2,000 km of trekking trails in the Sahyadri Mountains on OpenStreetMap after walking nearly 3,500 km across the range.

Community

• In the latest OpenCage’s OpenStreetMap interview series, Matt Whilden spoke about his journey as an OSM mapper, his work supporting the community through the OpenStreetMap US Board, and his passion for creative mapping.

• Jikke Meyer plans to map football stadiums on OpenStreetMap, starting from Botswana in Africa.

• Volker Krause joined an in-person workshop at HTW Berlin to discuss topics related to mapping indoor spaces in OpenStreetMap.

Local chapter news

• OSM Malaga tooted that the Ruedas Redondas association, a cycling users’ association in Malaga, has added a bicycle parking map ► to its website based on OpenStreetMap data. As they explained on their website, it is the ‘most complete and up-to-date’ bicycle parking map of the city, thanks to the collaborative work of the local OSM community.

Maps

• Nicolas Seriot has developed Cartopolis, a web app that renders OpenStreetMap data in a map style reminiscent of the late 1990s.

• HeiGIT presented a custom openrouteservice instance for disaster response in Venezuela, combining OpenStreetMap with real-time road-blockage data from HDX to dynamically route humanitarian vehicles around damaged or impassable infrastructure.

• Jaz Michaelking developed Fediverse Near Me, a web map based on OSM that visualises a curated selection of well-moderated social web providers that are open for registration and serve specific countries, regions, or cities.

• Alessandro Lorenzi has created OpenStreetPhoto, an interactive map that displays all the photos linked to a feature in the OpenStreetMap database. It is currently only available for Italy.

• Using the world’s restaurant data from OpenStreetMap, Vladimir Terentyev has developed a world map of dish names on restaurant signs, attempting to answer the research question: ‘Where does plov end and biryani begin, and who really draws these limits’?

OSM in action

• Stefan Keller presented two web mapping applications built on OpenStreetMap and open government data. VivaMap combines OSM POIs and buildings with official datasets to let users build customised quality-of-life indicators for Swiss neighbourhoods, while UrbanistMap lets communities collaboratively geolocate and visualise urban development projects worldwide. UrbanistMap is well suited to encouraging mappers with local knowledge to update the data in OSM.

Software

• ^[1]^ Oleksandr Nazarenko has built Pidyizdy, a navigation app focused on showing the exact location of building entrances and apartment number ranges. It is designed for couriers, taxi drivers, and utility service workers, so they don’t have to wander around apartment yards searching for the entrance.

• Pavel Gavrilov tried darkonus’ recently released JOSM plugin, FilletTools (we reported earlier). The plugin allows users to round the corners of lines and polygons, as well as convert freehand strokes into smooth ways. Pavel praised FilletTools, noting that new JOSM plugins rarely have such a strong case for becoming a standard tool in many users’ workflows.

• AnyFinder, originally released as a freemium app in 2019 for iPhone and iPad, is now available as a free browser-based application for finding, adding and editing OpenStreetMap places from phones, tablets, or desktop computers. AnyFinder uses Overpass and Postpass as its backend query engines. The app’s catalogue currently contains 286 place categories in 66 groups, from restaurants and shops to public services and natural features.

Categories define what kind of place to search for, while 128 filters refine results by properties such as wheelchair access, cuisine, fuel type, or available facilities. The current dataset covers 47 structured features and 435 OSM tags. Changes to places can be submitted directly to OpenStreetMap through the app using an OpenStreetMap account.

• Tina and Eugene introduced OsmAnd’s measuring tools, including Distance by Tap, Ruler, Radius Ruler, and Target Line.

• Tina and Eugene reported also that OsmAnd has discontinued ‘merged’ maps, which were large country- or region-level files assembled from smaller regional maps. Users who have one of these maps installed will no longer receive updates for it.

• David Larlet reported that uMap has received a grant through the NGI0 Commons Fund to integrate vector tiles into uMap. The current work is focused on vector tile customisation, allowing users to modify the map style, such as removing buildings or changing road colours, so the basemap can better fit the purpose of their map.

• Stadia Maps explained that moving from a geocoding prototype to a production-level application often reveals a frustrating reality: ‘standard’ industry pricing is rarely as simple as it looks. Most caching solutions charge steep premiums (often 6–8x normal query cost) to store results, and some impose strict rules limiting caching to single-user sessions only.

• OSM user SmallCat has published josm-account-manager, a plugin that lets you manage multiple account profiles and different endpoints in JOSM. It is available for installation from JOSM‘s plugin source.

• Koharachan announced , in her OSM User Diary, a fork of iD she is working on, and described its special features that ease mapping. She said that this editor introduces some AI assistance.

• Fedilab developed PawFed, a collaborative map for animal welfare. Mention @PawFed from your Mastodon account with relevant hashtags and a location, and your report will appear on the map. Shelters, veterinary clinics, lost or found animals, food donations, and other information that can help animals are displayed on the map.

• Venetis Charalampidis reported on the progress of the closures.osm.ch Google Summer of Code 2026 project, noting that one of its goals, adding a Valhalla-powered routing endpoint that genuinely avoids closed roads, has now been completed.

Programming

• Marcos Dione has developed a map showing the sizes of city blocks in Marseille by processing the street network data from OpenStreetMap.

• The Austrian-German OSM tile hoster Maptoolkit has launched a free vector tile server that permits commercial use. The cartography features rather opinionated cartography, with a focus on tourism and outdoor, including outdoor-specific styles (Hiking, Cycling, Winter), global hill-shading, contour lines, water depths, 3D terrain, and a maximum data zoom of 15 globally. It is hosted in the EU and privacy-friendly: No API key, login, or cookies. Fully compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This service supports custom style sheets, including a new, beginner-friendly map editor at mapmaker.maptoolkit.org. It includes AI-ready documentation. You’ll also find an interesting comparison with OpenFreeMap, Protomaps, Versatiles, and OpenMapTiles on the page.

• … Observing the City has made ‘Where is Downtown’? This is a web app that lets users draw what they consider to be the ‘downtown’ of a given city and compares their definition with everyone else’s.

Other “geo” things

• clement_igonet revealed on OSM US’s Slack that he had built a small MapLibre application that shows a time-slider over European administrative boundaries, where the polygons come from an API that models them with valid periods (from sources as INSEE COG, IGN Admin Express and Eurostat GISCO, all open data, no OSM data involved for now). The demo is available. You can watch a short video. The API in the background is api.confinia.io and the source is available on GitHub.

• The NOAA Office for Coastal Management runs four major programmes, one of which is the Digital Coast. In this context, the Sea Level Calculator has been launched, which estimates scenarios for changes in mean sea level, showing the sections of the coastline that would be affected (in monitoring regions). To assist researchers and other users, a series of short videos has been made available.

• HeiGIT has launched a new newsletter, Point of Interest. The first issue focuses on the latest evolution of openrouteservice, its newest developments for humanitarian (and other) uses, and where HeiGIT is heading next.

Mapping

• Voting is open for the following:

  • A proposal to add area-based wall mapping. This proposal focuses on enabling the mapping of walls as areas tagged with indoor=wall + area=yes (indoor mapping).
  • The data centre technical attributes proposal, until Wednesday 22 July. This proposal has its focus on adding attributes for telecom=data_center to describe some technical specifications: total power capacity, IT load, and usable floor area.

• Requests for comments have been called for on these proposals:

  • Deprecating int_name for foreign-language names and exonyms, since the key is used inconsistently for both romanisation and exonyms and does not follow the standard name:<language> pattern.

  • Extending the addr:* namespace with a numbered addr:2:* syntax, to tag multiple addresses directly on the same object, with a mandatory primary address used for rendering and reverse geocoding.

Community

• jellyfish_umbrella, on Mastodon, wondered how to properly tag cashierless services.

• Bluestarfish celebrated MapSwipe’s 10th anniversary by looking back at the MapSwipe launch party, which was held in London on 19 July 2016.

• Chris Debian, currently building an app for walking UK Public Rights of Way, has discovered Robert Whittaker’s UK Public Rights of Way toolkit for helping to fix the tags, and developed a workflow for manually verifying batches of fixes and reviewing which councils have quietly opened their data since the catalogue was last checked.

• Anne-Karoline Distel has published a video demonstrating how OpenStreetMap contributors can use street-level imagery from Bing Streetside, Mapillary, and Panoramax to improve map data. The tutorial focuses on using these imagery sources as references for mapping features that are difficult or impossible to identify from aerial imagery alone, such as shopfront names, traffic signs, road markings, pavements, cycle lanes, house numbers, benches, and other street-level details.

• Raquel Dezidério Souto reported that IVIDES DATA had just hosted the fifth session of the 2026 OSM Workshop and launched the ebook A short guide to create web maps with uMap.

• Rphyrin accidentally found a mapping sketch that he made around eight years ago during his early days of OpenStreetMap mapping.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

• The OpenStreetMap Foundation has invited everyone designing EU-funded project proposals that involve OpenStreetMap to engage with the foundation early, before submission. OSMF can act as a strategic partner on digital commons and digital sovereignty, bringing experience in open infrastructure governance and community-driven models, but not as a service provider or heavy operational actor. The post also flagged practical points to settle at the design phase, such as licensing compatibility (ODbL vs CC-BY), and how projects can give back to the OSM ecosystem, including financial contributions to the foundation’s sustainability.

The global FOSS4G conference in 2027 will be hosted in Bristol, United Kingdom.

Maps

• The Castle Map is a map of the world’s castles and fortresses. It displays the locations of more than 2,400 castles, fortresses, and palaces worldwide, using OpenStreetMap vector tiles provided by OpenFreeMap and landmark data from Wikidata.

• Chris Whong released a web version of the NYC Neighbourhoods map. Explore all 300+ neighbourhoods across all five boroughs, zoom in, and learn the geography of the city.

• geoObserver tooted about the ‘OSM-Zeitreise’, or the ‘before/after map’, on mapki.com, based on Ian Dees’ fork of Amanda McCann’s osm-mapping-party-before-after.

• Alyosha85 has built PlaySG, a free web map made using MapLibre GL that displays every playground in Singapore. The map is automatically refreshed every week by querying the latest OpenStreetMap data through the Overpass API.

• Peter Brodersen has made a route planner that can specifically avoid roads named after men. The data is based on an OpenStreetMap extract for Paris, where every street with the name:etymology:wikidata tag is compared to the corresponding Wikidata item with a specified gender. Streets named after men are marked in the extract, and a custom OSRM routing profile is then created to avoid those roads.

• TrainRouter is an interactive atlas of 767 notable passenger train routes worldwide, rendered on OpenStreetMap-based OpenFreeMap vector tiles. The underlying rail dataset is open and licensed under CC BY 4.0.

OSM in action

• ^[1]^ UPLB Tools has developed RoomTBA, a web app that helps students at the University of the Philippines Los Baños find classrooms and navigate the campus.

• Radatlas is a free, bilingual (German/English) atlas of Austria’s named cycle routes. Built from OpenStreetMap route geometry and Austria’s digital elevation model, it features interactive MapLibre maps, elevation profiles, and GPX and TCX downloads for each cycling route.

Open Data

• Pieter Vander Vennet explained how the Department of Mobility of the Province of Antwerp collected street-level imagery of Belgium’s cycle highways by mounting a GoPro camera on a cargo bike and uploading the captured images to both Mapillary and Panoramax.

• PizzaTreeIsland published an interactive map that combines street name etymology data from OpenStreetMap with Elo rankings from EloEverything. EloEverything is a project where users compare two concepts at a time, producing rankings for thousands of different things. The source code is available on GitHub.

Software

• Inspired by the RoomTBA campus map, rtnF is offering an HTML script to build a custom, self-hosted, 3D campus map powered by building height data from OpenStreetMap.

• Eugene Alvin Villar reflected on CoMaps’ first anniversary since its 3 July 2025 launch, describing it as a privacy-first, offline navigation app built on OpenStreetMap data with no tracking or advertising. The piece traced CoMaps’ lineage from the original MapsWithMe through Maps.me and Organic Maps, with each fork arising after community concerns over commercialisation and governance. Villar argued that CoMaps’ explicit not-for-profit mission, alongside its open-source licence, shows why the right to fork protects projects from being held hostage by any single company.

• FairwayMapper, renamed from OpenCourseMaps after a nod to the OSMF’s trademark policy, has introduced a free, purpose-built web editor for contributing detailed golf course data to OpenStreetMap. The platform also provides a limited-access Overpass instance for OpenStreetMap contributors. The service was launched on 10 July 2026.

• Diego Camargo announced

  that the GISBR 0.3.2 QGIS plugin can now query the Overpass API, download the roads of a selected municipality, and generate two layers with minimal topology: links (road segments) and nodes (the connections between them). This data can be used for transportation network modelling purposes.

• In the ongoing series featuring open-source projects in the mapping ecosystem, Geocode Earth showcased Protomaps, which can package map data into PMTiles files that can be hosted on ordinary web storage.

• v6.19.0 of the iD tagging schema was released. It has added support for maxweightrating in France, multiple new presets (boundary=protected_area and amenity=traffic_park and 5 more), bug fixes, tweaking of existing fields, new values (for example cuisine=austrian), new icons from Roentgen 0.16.0 and more. As at publication, two further updates have been released, both containing minor changes. The iD tagging schema is now at v.7.0.1.

• Egor Kotov tooted that backend v.0.4 now uses its own repository with OSRM binaries that are packaged to be self-contained (shipping with all required libraries) and immutable. More details are available.

Releases

• Freemap Europe announced that they have recently merged geotagged Wikimedia Commons photos into the main Photos layer, allowing users to browse more geotagged photos from both Wikimedia Commons and the Freemap community.

• GeoDesk has released GOL Tool 2.3, adding support for exporting query results in OSM-PBF format.

Did you know that …

• … the ShadeMap is a global shadow simulation tool that visualises the shadows cast by mountains, buildings, and trees for any location, date, and time? The platform calculates shadow positions in real time using OpenStreetMap building height data, Mapterhorn global terrain data, and tree canopy data from Meta and the World Resources Institute (2026).

Other “geo” things

• Bathymetrix-AI is an advanced QGIS plugin maintained by Nasef M Aly that offers a research toolkit for deriving high-precision Satellite-Derived Bathymetry (SDB) from corrected multi-spectral satellite imagery (e.g., Sentinel-2 Level-2A). It combines physics-based image processing with modern machine learning to improve bathymetric accuracy, while addressing many of the limitations of traditional SDB methods.

• The World Resources Institute has published a technical note, which describes Trazo, a framework for automatically delineating agricultural field boundaries in South America, from satellite imagery, and scaling these delineations to new geographies. There are five open resources under the CC-BY-4.0 licence, covering the technical foundation through to the 10.9-million-field release for the 2023–2024 planting season. In order to use this dataset, it is necessary to cite the technical note and the Fields of the World, which provides global predictions of agriculture field boundaries for selected years. It is available as an interactive map for Trazo.

• Early map exposure is a global challenge, not just a Kenyan one. Most school systems introduce engaging maps work too late, leaving a majority without vital spatial skills. The Cartography Fun with Maps programme, maintained by GeoMind Solutions, bridges this gap by introducing interactive cartography early. The video ‘What’s your map story?’, available on YouTube, shows some educational resources, such as the book series ‘Mappy Maria’ authored by Catherine Njore from Kenya, and published by Intercen Books. • The Guardian reported that Pokémon Go data may have been used to train AI capable of assisting military drones in war zones, following Niantic Spatial’s partnership with Vantor, a company specialising in spatial detection software for drones, including those used by some militaries.

• Caleb Robinson and Isaac Corley have developed Sentinel-2 Paint, a browser app that repaints any satellite image taken by Sentinel-2 as a mosaic of real, geolocated colourful patches of the planet.

• Candid Dauth has developed a set of overlay tiles highlighting toll roads, roads where cycling is prohibited, and roads with cobblestone surfaces. The overlays are hosted on tiles.facilmap.org and are also available as map styles in FacilMap.

• Frédéric Rodrigo posted an entry, on their OSM User Diary, about major changes introduced by version 0.5 of Clearance, a free software tool for controlling the quality of OpenStreetMap replication diffs (we reported earlier). It tracks thematic and territorial edits to OSM and keeps replication extracts (extracts, diffs, and a local Overpass API) up to date. The source code is available on GitHub.

• M Fuhrmann reported

  

  that the OpenStreetMap community in the German city of Fulda, in cooperation with Magrathea Laboratories e.V. – Chaos Computer Club Fulda, has launched a Panoramax instance.

• Rodolphe Bussers, a Belgian hiker, has published mongr20.com, a bilingual (French/English) website for those planning to walk the GR20 (Corsica) trail, built entirely on OSM: the route is compiled from OSM data (182.4 km), freely downloadable as ODbL GPX tracks of all 16 official stages, an interactive stage planner, and derived analyses (per-stage effort scores in both walking directions).

• Anne-Karoline Distel shared a video on mapping wheelchair accessibility in OpenStreetMap, based on a presentation delivered at the Irish Wheelchair Association in Kilkenny (Ireland).

OSM research

• DoudouOSM highlighted that pavements, ramps, kerb ramps, stairs, pedestrian crossings, and streets are the key elements of accessibility mapping in OpenStreetMap, while properties such as length, slope, width, and surface play a crucial role in determining wheelchair mobility in urban environments.

Humanitarian OSM

• Akash Wadhwani has created an interactive visual essay exploring OpenStreetMap editing activity following the February 2023 Türkiye–Syria earthquake.

• The National Center for Monitoring and Alerts for Natural Disasters of Brazil has launched

• Open Water Software LLC has developed Seascape, a web-based global seafloor bathymetry dataset delivered as map tiles. Built from a mosaic of global and regional sources, it provides raster digital elevation model tiles for depth shading and hill shading, along with vector contour tiles.

• Andrea Grandi developed Book Corners, a map designed to help users discover and share nearby free little libraries. The application retrieves location data via the Overpass API, which is then processed through its data pipeline.

  using maxspeed-map, while encouraging users to contribute to Panoramax, noting that submitted photos help categorise speed limits on road segments.

• Stevefaeembra shared a map of lighthouses across Europe, created using OpenStreetMap data.

• ‘Third Places’ is a web map of New York City’s community gatherings, based on OpenStreetMap, from which were extracted all place nodes in NYC matching the ’third place’ categories such as coffee shops, bars, libraries, parks, community centres, places of worship, bookshops, laundrettes, and dozens of other types. The term ’third place’ was coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg in 1989 to describe the informal gathering spaces that anchor community life, distinct from home (the first place) and work (the second place).

OSM in action

• Julian Lindner, a student of urban planning, has launched Plantaube. This online tool enables urban planners and architects to create attractive city and site plans using OSM data. The tool is fully customisable and can be used free of charge in a web browser.

• Max Kreisler developed Rauchfrei Berlin, a community-driven map of smoke-free bars and venues across Berlin. The listings are crowd-sourced, allowing users to contribute by suggesting venues that are missing from the map.

• Tempo na Rota provides

  

  weather conditions and forecasts along travel routes across Brazil, using OpenStreetMap data as its basemap.

Open Data

• Panoramax showcased several region-specific instances that are currently accessible online.

• In a blog post, Stadia Maps explained that proprietary map services use outdated data collected during embargo periods, which leads to persistent errors. Instead, the company relies on open and proprietary data streams, ‘Fix-it’ links for reporting errors embedded directly within the API, and updates at least once a month. In addition, Stadia Maps is collaborating on an open-source set of address templates to reflect country-specific address conventions.

Software

• Christian Quest reported

  

  that the Panoramax instance operated by @ignfrance@social.numerique.gouv.fr will be migrated during the Bastille Day long weekend (around the 14 July public holiday in France). During the migration, the service will be temporarily switched to read-only mode. Users will be unable to upload new photos for a few hours, although all existing photos will remain accessible for viewing throughout the maintenance period.

• fghj753 developed a working prototype that allows users to select a packaging container’s colour, instead of manually listing 15 to 30 recycling:* tags, with the editor automatically applying the appropriate tags.

• Stadia Maps explained that Google deprecated the ‘Heatmap Layer’ in its Maps JavaScript API in May 2025 and removed it entirely one year later, leaving google.maps.visualization.HeatmapLayer users without a migration path. The company described how a former Google Maps customer switched to MapLibre GL JS with Stadia Maps tiles, gaining a native, zoom-responsive heatmap layer not tied to any single vendor. Stadia Maps argued the episode shows the risk of building on closed platforms, where features can disappear without warning.

• Frank März has developed Hydrant Hunter v1.5.3, a web-based tool that allows users to photograph fire hydrants and upload the images, along with their geographic coordinates.

• Ian Dees has made a web-based tool that generates before-and-after images of areas in OpenStreetMap, allowing users to visualise mapping progress over time.

• Project OSRM announced that OSRM now offers official Python bindings, allowing users to access routing, table, match, trip, and nearest functionalities directly from Python.

• Andy Townsend tooted that switch2osm.org has been updated to cover tile servers using both ‘flex’ as well as the older ‘pgsql’ outputs.

• mschwehl has developed TourGaze, a local-first ride viewer that enables users to import, browse, tag, replay, compare, and analyse recorded tours data. The application converts FIT, GPX, TCX, and KMZ files into a searchable, taggable ride library, featuring cinematic map replays, advanced ride analytics, and a ghost-chase comparison mode.

• vgeorge has built ‘OSM for Cities’? This is a platform that makes OpenStreetMap-based city data more accessible by distributing open datasets for urban areas worldwide. Users can search for any city and explore data within its administrative boundaries without requiring technical expertise or data preparation. The platform supports a range of ready-made map templates, including bus stops, schools, and trees, allowing users to visualise selected datasets with a single search.

Programming

• Paco Albacete Chicano shared a progress update on his Google Summer of Code project, which focuses on prototyping a medial axis implementation for area routing in Valhalla. The medial axis, also known as a topological skeleton, is a geometric representation used to compute efficient navigation paths through open spaces.

• Nicolas Lambert has developed Geoviz, a JavaScript library for designing thematic maps.

Releases

• Organic Maps has released its June 2026 update, which added navigation for all types of public transport, alternative routes, and the ability to specify a custom map background (for example, satellite or terrain)

• Pablo Brasero recapped the recent changes made to the OpenStreetMap website, including a switch of the Shortbread slippy map style from Versatiles Colorful to SVWD03 (we reported earlier) and an update of iD to version 2.41. The recap also covered performance work, such as re-enabling JavaScript minimisation and reducing the amount of script sent to visitors, and an upcoming feature that lets moderators define time-limited zones blocking anonymous notes.

• Staatsanzeiger reported

  that the government of Baden-Württemberg, one of Germany’s 16 federal states, has announced measures to strengthen its defence capabilities and resilience. Interior Minister Manuel Hagel said the initiatives include protecting sensitive locations in online mapping services. His ministry will instruct all state departments to ensure that sensitive information is obscured or pixelated on map platforms.

• QGIS has announced the beginning of a new development phase leading to the next long-term release of QGIS (4.2.4), which builds on the foundation of the Major Version 4.0 update that transitioned the core of QGIS onto the modern Qt6 framework. This release bundles loads of performance optimisations and newly introduced features, including multiple enhancements to 3D capabilities and processing tools. The 4.2.4 release is scheduled for the end of October.

• The proposal for railway=balise, fixed transponders placed on or between rails that communicate with trains to provide positioning data and transmit operational information, is open for voting from 27 June 2026 to 10 July 2026.

Mapping campaigns

• After the two strong earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on Wednesday 24 June 2026, HOT has added collaborative mapping projects to their tasking manager to collect and share critical geospatial data to support emergency response efforts. Ongoing activities also include acquiring pre- and post-earthquake satellite imagery, coordinating crowdsourced remote mapping, and conducting field mapping campaigns to document damaged structures with their locations, photographs, and videos.

• Steve Vigneau has overhauled trailmaps.app, a web map that combines trail signage and official trail maps with OpenStreetMap data. Rather than maintaining individual maps, the redesigned platform is powered by a map generation system that automatically integrates data from OpenStreetMap and other freely available sources to produce static, cacheable map content that remains accessible even when mobile connectivity is unavailable.

  that Wikimedia Commons is probably a good source of geographical objects that are still missing from OpenStreetMap and has developed a workflow to find geospatial data on Commons using the PetScan tool.

• Rtnf has developed a prototype interactive map that allows users to explore angkot (shared taxi) routes in Indonesia, combining routing data generated by BRouter with geographic data from OpenStreetMap.

• The fire department in Talling, Germany is explicitly asking

  

  for an AED defibrillator logo, so they can be represented on OpenStreetMap. In the comments, people point to the defibrillator map created by the Polish OpenStreetMap community and mention that OsmAnd and CoMaps already display defibrillators. GeoMH also gave

• Grant Slater is raising funds to purchase the missing sheets from the complete historical 1:50,000 topographic map series of Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia), produced by the Department of the Surveyor-General and the Zimbabwean Air Force. Once purchased, he will process the maps and make them freely available online so that researchers, historians, genealogists, mappers, local communities, and anyone interested in Zimbabwe’s history can access them.

• Internet Archive Europe reported (also shared on Mastodon) on a workshop held in Amsterdam titled ‘Maps are Infrastructure too’. The post emphasised the importance of OpenStreetMap as a knowledge commons and highlighted MapLibre as a key tool for digital sovereignty, arguing that open map infrastructure is essential for long-term public access and memory.

• Kentoseth has published a detailed tutorial (also shared on Mastodon) on how to mass import address data into OpenStreetMap using JOSM. The guide covers data preparation using OpenAddresses.io, essential JOSM plugins such as conflation, and emphasises the importance of manual validation against local GIS sources.

• Muki Haklay, Professor of Geographical Information Science in the UCL Department of Geography, and UCL alumnus Patrick Weber, have won the IEEE’s Pervasive Computing’s Test of Time Award for their 2008 paper on OpenStreetMap. The award honours the most influential papers that have had a lasting impact on pervasive computing over the past 25 years. Over the eighteen years since Muki’s paper was published the OpenStreetMap project, which was launched at UCL in 2004, has evolved into critical digital infrastructure that supports research, humanitarian response, navigation systems, smart cities, and countless location-based services.

• mgeograficas has created a uMap showing the distribution of sedimentary deposits from the Quaternary period (most recent) and the Neoproterozoic era (oldest), in Campos dos Goytacazes, in the state of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

• Longtrails.de is a new interactive planning

  

  tool for long-distance hiking in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. As noted

• Tom Scott’s video ‘Why trains don’t usually crash into each other’ features a printed OpenStreetMap map (at the 17:19 mark) used to illustrate the UK’s rail network. • The Museum of the History of Dnipro (Ukraine) has launched

  

  an interactive map of the city’s streets based on OpenStreetMap data. The resource, created as part of the ZMINA 2.0 project with European Union financial support, provides the history and explanations for over 500 of the streets renamed since 2014.

Software

• Kai Johnson is investigating how much of the Overpass query language could be implemented using the QLever database.

• OpenMapEditor has been relaunched as MapDraw, a free, open-source, local-first web editor for personal geographic data. The tool now supports contributing to OpenStreetMap directly from the map, adding nodes (benches, drinking water, bike parking, and more), and leaving notes. The source code is available under the AGPL-3.0 licence.

• OSM MultiToolz (available for Chrome and Firefox) is a browser extension, built by dp7, designed to assist OpenStreetMap contributors. It provides advanced changeset analysis, integration with various QA tools (including OSMCha and Achavi), a smart watchlist for monitoring edits, and built-in translation for changeset comments.

• VK Maps’ Overpass instance is once again available

  

  for use, after being shut down for several months.

• Ian Wagner noted, on Stadia Maps’ blog, that the long-term viability of any motor vehicle routing project hinges on two ‘invisible’ variables: data privacy architecture and billing predictability.

Programming

• Paco Albacete Chicano blogged that his Google Summer of Code project will focus on area routing in Valhalla. This is expected to allow routes to cross areas, such as public squares, directly instead of circling around them and producing inefficient or awkward paths.

• Windows Central reported that rampant AI‑driven GitHub outages have forced Microsoft into an unlikely alliance with Amazon. GitHub processed 1 billion commits in 2025, compared to 14 billion expected in 2026.

Releases

• Heise reported that Murena has released version 4.0 of its Google-free Android fork, /e/OS. The update includes Murena Maps v1.0.0-beta, powered by data from OpenStreetMap.

• Sergey (enzet) released version 0.16.0 of Röntgen, a specialised icon set for OpenStreetMap. The update, announced on Mastodon, added 16 new community-requested icons (including various vending machines and railway features) and is now also available as an npm package.

• osm2pgsql has released version 2.3.0, introducing major changes to tile expiry, a new style tester script, and numerous additional improvements.

• iD version 2.41.0 has been released. Key updates include automatic data downloading when splitting ways in relations, a new marker-based rendering for embankments and cuttings, and improved Wikidata searches that now display item descriptions.

• … OpenCage has an extensive archive of their OpenStreetMap community interviews? The series started in 2014 and recent entries include conversations with Omran Najjar on OSM in Syria, Volker Krause about the open-source routing engine Transitous, and Christian Quest on the Panoramax Foundation.

• … uMap now has ‘draw along route’ functionality? It’s great for creating OSM-routable routes.

• … scy has shared some tips on how to customise OsmAnd’s map appearance to improve readability and accessibility. The settings, located in the main menu under ‘Customise Map’, allow users to adjust the contrast and line thickness, as well as switch between different map styles.

• Christina Queiroz has explored how participatory and social cartography are being used as tools for rights advocacy and territorial claims. Their article highlighted projects such as the self-demarcation of the Borari people and the use of OpenStreetMap to map services in favelas, challenging official state narratives.

• The YouTube channel Veritasium has published a video titled ‘Google Maps is unreasonably fast. Let me explain’, which explores the complex algorithms behind modern routing and navigation. • Innocent Maholi, from OpenMap Development Tanzania, published a tribute to his friend, Iddy Rashid Chazua, remembering his impact and the legacy he leaves.

• Raquel Dezidério Souto wrote, in her OSM User Diary, about the second meeting of the 2026 OpenStreetMap Workshop Series. The meeting took place on Friday 22 May and covered the generation of aerial imagery from drone photos on OpenDroneMap; uploading images to OpenAerialMap; mapping with custom images in OSM editors; and creating relationships, with an emphasis on multipolygons. The event provided certificates to those who completed the tasks, and registration remains open for the remaining sessions.

• Simon Ertel has launched Drevesa, an interactive map that transforms Ljubljana’s ‘Trees of the Year’ into a gamified urban trail. The project invites people to find and visit each winning specimen elected by citizens since 2019. By visiting these remarkable trees in real life, users can unlock information about tree species and learn the basics of arboriculture.

• Franjo Lukežić shared the first in a set of heuristics that they use while field surveying, with the first one regarding how to survey highways.

OSM research

• Héctor Ochoa-Ortiz and others have concluded that the current micro-tasking model employed by the HOT Tasking Manager hampers the development of spatial collective intelligence, producing fragmented and inconsistent outputs that ultimately diminish overall data quality. In their study, the researchers proposed several practical measures to mitigate these issues, including the use of overlapping task boundaries and mechanisms to encourage implicit coordination among contributors.

• The Civic Control platform has published

  

  a map of cultural heritage sites in Dnipro (Ukraine). This resource contains information on architectural monuments and newly identified cultural heritage objects, including addresses, protection status, registration documents, ownership information, and photographs. The project aims to improve transparency in the field of cultural heritage protection and facilitate public access to relevant data.

• HuggeK has developed golftiles, an open-source project to generate golf-centric PMTiles for mapping applications that want to highlight golf course maps.

Open Data

• Foursquare has open-sourced the Foursquare OS Places dataset, a global database of more than 100 million points-of-interest data, under the Apache License Version 2.0. They have invited public participation through its Placemaker Tools platform, which allows users to contribute to and improve the OS Places dataset.

Software

• Ian Wagner wrote, on Stadia Maps’ blog, about how Valhalla and OpenStreetMap are used to build routing profiles that encode each vehicle’s physical and legal constraints from the ground up.

• Tina and Eugene explained how OsmAnd turns 3D building tags from OpenStreetMap data into rendered buildings displayed within the application.

• didier2020 has written a new analyser for Osmose, which detects potentially duplicated POIs on OpenStreetMap. The source is available on GitHub.

Releases

  to dozens of open datasets, APIs, maps, and dashboards published by Kyiv city authorities? This platform currently hosts 87 datasets covering topics such as transport, cycling infrastructure, air quality, civil protection, public participation, and municipal services.

• ^[1]^ … OnRouteMap is an OpenStreetMap-based tool for planning and analysing outdoor routes? Recently features such as POI filters, GPX/KML export of favourites, and new language support have been added.

• Tohu Bohu Games and Quentin Vijoux presented the game ‘Beware of the Cartographer’. Players map a remote area, draw a border between two kingdoms during the Age of Enlightenment, and have to balance their surveying mission with local interests and political consequences.

• Foursquare explained how it addressed the micro-location challenge, noting that places located inside buildings are often difficult to pinpoint accurately because different data sources frequently provide conflicting coordinates. Conventional geocoding methods typically return broad building-level locations, a level of precision considered inadequate for many modern applications, prompting Foursquare to develop its ‘Geosummarization’ model to improve geolocation accuracy at a more granular level.

• Ari Alvarez explained how to find speed limit data for highways, trunk roads, and primary roads in the USA.

• Raquel Dezidério Souto published on her OSM User Diary, an article entitled “About us”: two years of experience as editor for Brazilian Portuguese at weeklyOSM, some highlights from this period , with part of the news published in weeklyOSM over the past two years, to celebrate her second anniversary of editing this language. She thanks her colleagues: Thayná Assis, Adriele Bernardo, Lívia Rios (ex members), and the actual co-editors: Paloma Moreira, Amanda Silva, Matheus Magalhães, Vitor Sousa, and Francisco Theodoro.

• Lux Schuss noted that there are several issues with the walk=no tag.

• The Unique Mappers Network participated in the volunteer orientation training for the Port Harcourt Tech Expo 2026, in preparation for the upcoming event. During the expo the organisation is set to contribute through digital mapping activities and demonstrations of the OpenStreetMap platform.

• Christoph Hormann shared a curated selection of reference materials regarding the FOSSGIS membership fee structure, offering a transparent look into the association’s own perspective on the issue.

• Leni_v has launched urbanistmap.org, a web platform that tracks urban projects worldwide by showing all OpenStreetMap data tagged as proposed, planned, or under construction.

  application, hosted on PythonAnywhere, utilises OpenStreetMap data to assess neighbourhoods based on accessibility to key amenities. The platform conducts a multi-facility analysis by calculating the reachability of various services, including schools, hospitals, markets, parks, gyms, pharmacies, libraries, and cafés, to help users evaluate potential places to live.

Open Data

• Tobias reported that the Panoramax project has developed an AI model capable of recognising German traffic signs from street-level imagery.

Software

• The Bike Streets team developed a new tool that automatically determines whether changes to OpenStreetMap data could potentially affect Bike Streets maps.

• Altilunium has built ‘Terjangkau: Neighborhood Explorer’, a map-based tool designed to help users discover, categorise, and measure distances to neighbourhood facilities and points of interest within a one-kilometre radius of any selected location. Powered by OpenStreetMap data, the platform enables interactive exploration of nearby amenities based on clicked map coordinates.

• Open Energy Transition and MapYourGrid have developed Grid2Poster, an app that generates print-ready posters of electrical transmission grids using data from OpenStreetMap.

• HeiGIT released an application that calculates pedestrian routes based on high-resolution shadow data, steering people through shaded corridors and away from sun-exposed roads. The routing itself runs on openrouteservice, HeiGIT’s open-source routing engine, with OpenStreetMap road geometries as the underlying road network.

Programming

• Manbhav Sugla has been selected for the 2026 Google Summer of Code to develop support for a DuckDB backend in Martin TileServer. As part of the project, Sugla will also publish diary entries documenting the development progress.

Releases

• Bikerouter has launched version 2026.13, introducing a ‘Route Inspector’ tool that enables users to view information about the route and its segments directly on the map.

• OSRM-frontend version 0.5.0 has been released, introducing several new features and bug fixes.

• Rphyrin has released Altilunium LocationPad v26.5.22, introducing support for long-form place descriptions. This update allows users to store extended paragraphs about locations within this personal geographical knowledge base.

  that the Chungnam Culture and Tourism Foundation held a cycling tour, in conjunction with a train trip, on 16 and 17 May. The ride route map distributed by the foundation used OSM as the background map, but unfortunately it is not attributed.

Other “geo” things

• Jonn Elledge explained how difficult it is to properly measure the length of a river.

• Time reported that Iran is threatening to charge annual fees for fibre-optic cables running beneath the Strait of Hormuz, putting several submarine cable systems at risk, including Asia-Africa-Europe 1 and Southeast Asia–Middle East–Western Europe 5. Experts warned that Southeast Asian hubs could experience severe latency spikes when communicating with European hubs.
